A Patron of Strangers

As Street Car Blanche was fond of saying, "I've always depended on the kindness of strangers". In a different light and situation, I too have depended on the many kindness and benefits received from strangers. Benefits to myself, my writings and my general understanding of all things with value.

It is unfortunate that we aren't all more open to give & take in this Modern world, especially the off-line world of day-to-day life. Whether it's Whole Foods, Saks, WalMart, Goodwill or waiting for a bus; there's not nearly enough direct human interaction, and kindnesses exchanged with the strangers we are among. Smiles and polite greetings, some unsolicited assistance - compliments -comments are really the most important things we do for ourselves and society. They matter more than we can know too, as examples to others - especially children & the down-trodden. These acts feed the circle of whatever you want to call it... "pay it forward", "Christan charity", "giving back", etc.

This does not mean syrup-slathered "I love you man" sentimentalism. It also does not mean, necessarily, turning the other cheek until you require hospitalization. Polite but respectful & firm, suites and serves civilization better. And it is a healthier social diet, if we all wish to grow up to be wise and strong human beings, defenders of the weak and children of God.

I do my best to practice this in all my interactions, off & on-line. And I hope those strangers I meet will strive to do the same... and gently remind me when I'm failing in this, too. It's just common courtesy, and a kindness owed to strangers.
